David Barton, a Christian nationalist and founder of the advocacy group WallBuilders, has been appointed as a content adviser to the Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) as they revise social studies standards. This revision aims to emphasize Texas and U.S. history while minimizing aspects of world cultures and history, signaling a push by Republican board members to integrate fundamentalist Christian beliefs into public school education.
Barton lacks formal credentials in history or constitutional law, holding only a bachelor’s degree in Christian education. His controversial views contradict mainstream historical scholarship, including claims against the separation of church and state and calls for government regulation of homosexuality. Barton’s past work, including the book The Jefferson Lies, was criticized for historical inaccuracies.
The Texas Freedom Network has condemned Barton’s appointment, warning it politicizes the educational process and detracts from factual teaching. Despite his contentious reputation, SBOE members praised his commitment to historical accuracy and Texas exceptionalism.
