Elon Musk’s new online encyclopedia, Grokipedia, has been found to promote various far-right ideologies, including white nationalism, scientific racism, and admiration for neo-Nazis. Launched with the intent to “purge out the propaganda” of Wikipedia, Grokipedia currently has over 800,000 entries generated and “fact-checked” by xAI’s AI model, Grok.
Entries on figures like Jared Taylor and Kevin MacDonald depict them positively while undermining their critics, portraying their beliefs as legitimate academic discourse rather than hate speech. For example, Jared Taylor is described as fostering “measured dissent” in white identity politics, while MacDonald’s work is framed as valuable in reassessing societal group dynamics.
Additionally, the site presents historical figures and concepts associated with white supremacy and eugenics in favorable terms. It attempts to recontextualize controversial figures like David Irving and William Luther Pierce as defenders of “institutional integrity” and “intellectual rigor,” downplaying their extremist views. It also argues for racial nationalism on pseudo-scientific grounds, suggesting that it promotes social cohesion and is beneficial for societal well-being.
Entries justify eugenics and racial nationalism by citing evolutionary biology, while dismissing critiques as biased ideologically. Grokipedia’s portrayal of historical white-supremacist regimes, like Rhodesia, presents them as success stories in resource management, challenging narratives of decolonization.
Experts express concern that Musk is using Grokipedia to mainstream extremist ideologies, effectively laundering white supremacy into public discourse. The encyclopedia is seen as a tool for distorting factual narratives and promoting racism under the guise of alternative knowledge. Overall, Grokipedia appears to be aligned with Musk’s critiques of established knowledge frameworks, favoring right-wing ideologies in its entries.
