Cardinal Sebastian Francis of Penang believes that the Church in Asia should remain authentic to its mission of serving all people in response to the rise of religious nationalism. As a prominent advocate for interreligious dialogue, Francis emphasizes the importance of building unity in Malaysia’s diverse culture, which exemplifies a “unity in diversity.”
Hosting the recent “Great Pilgrimage of Hope,” he sees it as an opportunity for Malaysian Catholics to connect with broader Asian communities, recognizing their historical contributions since the arrival of Christianity in Asia. He acknowledges the challenges posed by religious nationalism, particularly for minorities like Christians, underscoring the importance of upholding universal values such as freedom of conscience, as outlined in the UN Charter.
Francis views interfaith dialogue as essential for harmony and advocates for personal engagement and relationship-building among different faiths. Reflecting on the past 55 years of the Federation of Asian Bishops’ Conferences (FABC), he notes significant achievements and challenges in energizing Asian churches.
He expresses optimism about the role of Catholic media in Asia, particularly among the youth, while also highlighting the need for media to promote truth and positivity. For the FABC to transform into a true missionary Church, he advocates for strong bonds among bishops and unity amid diversity, envisioning a shared Asian identity in faith.
In conclusion, he believes that the Church can thrive in Asia by embracing its cultural richness while remaining focused on its mission of hope and service.
