A new Eurocentric social media platform called W has been launched during the World Economic Forum in Davos, aimed at providing an alternative to US-controlled services like Elon Musk’s X. The platform focuses on trusted sources and data privacy, with a strong emphasis on human verification and European governance. CEO Anna Zeiter emphasizes the need for such a platform amid concerns over disinformation undermining public trust and democracy. Currently, W is available only for early testers and requires photo ID for posting. The move comes after European politicians expressed dissatisfaction with dominant platforms. While launching a social media platform is challenging, there is growing sentiment in Europe to shift away from American services.
