In August 2025, the EDMO fact-checking network published 1,441 articles, with 127 (9%) targeting climate change disinformation, 99 (7%) on Ukraine, 90 (6%) each on EU and immigration issues, and 79 (5%) on the Israel-Hamas conflict. Disinformation around climate change led the focus, reflecting a rising trend. Claims about the Ukraine war and EU narratives also surged, including exaggerated portrayals of Europe’s militarization and misinformation about military actions.
Pro-Russian narratives, alongside misleading information about Ukrainian internal conditions, spread discord among allies. Furthermore, climate change disinformation persisted, with narratives linking extreme events to political entities and conspiracy theories circulating in Mediterranean countries about wildfires.
AI-generated disinformation remains prevalent, comprising 10% of articles, with misinformation from AI tools contributing to the spread of fake stories. Overall, disinformation continued to evolve in response to current global issues while leveraging new technologies.
