Tony Gilroy, the creator of Andor, recently discussed the show’s parallels to real-world events during a press tour for its second and final season. While he previously offered diplomatic answers about the show’s themes relating to fascism and authoritarian regimes, he has now revealed that Disney asked him to avoid certain terms like “fascism” or “genocide” in interviews. He explained that this strategy was developed to protect the varied political views of the cast and to avoid putting them in uncomfortable positions during promotional events.
Gilroy noted that while the show draws on historical models, he feels freer to acknowledge its connections to the current political climate. He described the situation in America as “an absolute gothic nightmare,” comparing it to the dynamics of the Galactic Empire. He humorously remarked that the tactics used in Washington seemed to align seamlessly with those depicted in Andor, highlighting the ongoing relevance of themes like totalitarianism and autocracy in both the fictional universe and real life.
