At the Munich Cyber Security Conference, Taiwan’s first digital minister, Audrey Tang, highlighted the country’s use of AI in combating disinformation, which many view as an ongoing threat more pressing than a potential military invasion by China. Taiwanese citizens are actively addressing disinformation across communities, emphasizing the importance of their democratic values.
Investigative journalist Jason Liu and co-founder of CoFact, Billion Lee, represent two innovative approaches to this battle. Liu focuses on grassroots initiatives, organizing community events to discuss disinformation and encourage face-to-face interactions, while Lee’s organization has developed a chatbot for fact-checking and offers resources for identifying misinformation. Both emphasize the necessity for civic engagement against disinformation, rather than solely blaming external forces like the Chinese government.
