Since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Russian media outlets RT and Sputnik have significantly increased their influence in Mexico, promoting anti-American and anti-Ukrainian narratives. This activity, noted by American diplomats and tracked by disinformation experts, is characterized as sudden and aggressive, aiming to erode trust between Mexico and the U.S., thereby complicating international support for Ukraine.
The Kremlin’s disinformation strategies include spreading false claims about alleged recruitment of Mexican and Colombian cartels by the U.S. and Ukraine to fight Russia. These narratives receive support from local politicians and are integrated into the regional media landscape, which further discredits international backing for Ukraine and portrays the West as aggressive.
Russian media engage with local platforms, including the Mexican Journalists Club, to disseminate state media narratives, often presenting themselves as sources of “alternative information.” Additionally, training and lectures by RT representatives enhance their connectivity with local journalists.
As part of its strategy, Russia utilizes a combination of informational, political, and intelligence tools to foster anti-American sentiments and weaken Ukraine’s support. This approach is evident even in France, where over 200 fake media sites have emerged, mimicking reputable publications to spread pro-Kremlin messages.
Experts urge enhanced media monitoring and international coordination to protect regional stability and uphold support for Ukraine.
