Eighty years after the 10th Mountain Division liberated parts of Italy during World War II, descendants of the soldiers returned to commemorate their legacy. The visit included members from Colorado, who were greeted warmly by locals, particularly in Tuscany. Mayor Barbara Franchi honored their ancestors and highlighted the dangers of rising fascism globally, reflecting her fears about current political trends.
Some descendants expressed concerns that the U.S. is moving toward fascism, with Peggy Hall sharing her fear for America’s freedoms. In contrast, others like Ross Raney disagreed, feeling the term “fascism” is misapplied. The trip included visits to historic sites and culminated in celebrations with the Italian community, reinforcing transatlantic ties and collective memories of freedom. Mayor Franchi expressed gratitude for the American soldiers’ sacrifices, emphasizing the ongoing importance of remembrance.
