CPI General Secretary D. Raja called for greater unity among Left parties during the 25th Congress of the CPI in Chandigarh, emphasizing the need to challenge the BJP and engage more deeply with the masses and younger generations through digital platforms. Highlighting the century-long history of the CPI, Raja paid tribute to past leaders and stressed the importance of the congress taking place during this significant milestone.
He criticized the BJP’s rise to power since 2014, arguing it marked a qualitative change in Indian polity, leading to a systematic assault on democratic foundations, including Parliament and the judiciary. Raja emphasized that while the recent Lok Sabha elections had shown the potential for resistance, the Opposition must present a cohesive agenda rooted in secularism and social justice to effectively combat fascism.
Raja urged for a decisive role of the Left in opposing the BJP and preached that the unity among Left parties is a historical necessity. He called for a broader unity among secular and democratic forces, advocating for engagement in various mass movements to defend constitutional rights and promote democratic values. The congress aimed to convey CPI’s commitment to equality, secularism, and socialism, and encouraged utilizing new communication methods to connect with youth.
Attendees included leaders from various Left parties, all acknowledging the critical struggle against authoritarianism and fascism in contemporary Indian politics.
