A Rutgers University professor, known as “Dr. Antifa,” has fled abroad due to death threats linked to his anti-fascist views. Dr. Mark Bray, who teaches about anti-fascism and terrorism, received threats after an online petition with over 1,500 signatures sought his removal, branding him a “well-known antifa member.” The petition highlighted his 2017 book, “Antifa: The Anti-Fascist Handbook,” which details militant anti-fascism and donates 50% of its proceeds to the International-Fascist Defense Fund, aimed at supporting legal and medical costs for anti-fascism activists. Bray denies any active ties to antifa groups, stating his role is academic. Threats increased after his address was shared online, prompting him and his wife to teach remotely from Spain. Although Rutgers offered additional security, Bray deemed it insufficient. In response, the university committed to maintaining a secure environment for academic dialogue. Colleagues criticized the threats, emphasizing the need for academic freedom and condemning hate speech. Bray is among many professors targeted by a watchlist created by Turning Point USA.
