In 2024, Sully Atheirne, a high school senior, shifted from planning for college to actively fighting against what they perceive as threats to democracy following Donald Trump’s second presidential election. Initially not an activist, Atheirne became heavily involved with Refuse Fascism after participating in protests and immediately taking a leadership role at rallies.
Refuse Fascism, founded in 2016, aims to unite diverse groups in mass protests to combat Trump’s divisive policies and perceived authoritarianism. Atheirne and other young volunteers engage in organizing events, including a significant movement launching on November 5 to maintain pressure in Washington, D.C., where Atheirne believes sustained resistance is crucial.
Justice Forál, another activist, also found her calling with Refuse Fascism and emphasizes the importance of persistent action in D.C. Protests are designed to incite political change, ideally contributing to processes like impeachment. While mass participation is ideal, support can also come from those unable to attend, through donations and local organizing efforts.
Refuse Fascism continues to plan events, maintaining that ongoing dissent is vital for democracy.
