The “Fighting Oligarchy” Tour recently visited Amarillo, Texas, featuring progressive leaders like Congressman Greg Casar and former Congressman Beto O’Rourke. The tour aims to tackle income inequality, corporate power, and workers’ rights. Casar criticized billionaires like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg, claiming they’ve bought political influence and tax breaks that hurt working-class people. Although Senator Bernie Sanders was scheduled to speak in person, he participated via phone after postponing due to international tensions.
During the event, Casar emphasized the disparities in wealth distribution, noting that one billionaire possesses more wealth than the bottom 52% of American families. O’Rourke highlighted the importance of fair wages and public education, urging civic engagement in conservative regions. He spoke about the struggles families face, envisioning a future where they don’t have to juggle multiple jobs.
Both Casar and O’Rourke advocated for immigration reforms and better wages for local workers, particularly in the meatpacking industry. Local physician Dr. Frederick Poage discussed healthcare challenges in the community, framing the issue as a matter of human rights rather than a political one. The rally brought attention to broader issues of power and policy in the region.
