Moldovan President Maia Sandu has accused Russia of attempting to influence the upcoming parliamentary election through bribery and disinformation aimed at undermining the European Union. She stated that Russia seeks to control Moldova’s power and use the country against Ukraine and other European nations. The election is crucial for determining Moldova’s trajectory towards EU membership amidst rising tensions with Russia.
Prime Minister Dorin Recean also highlighted Russia’s alleged efforts to sway the election by spending heavily on vote-buying initiatives, describing it as a siege on the country. Polls show a tight race between Sandu’s pro-EU Party of Action and Solidarity (PAS) and the pro-Russian Patriotic Bloc, both at approximately 25% support. The election’s outcome may necessitate coalition-building among smaller parties.
Concerns regarding the economy and security stemming from the ongoing war in Ukraine have dominated the campaign. Many voters are undecided, with the Moldovan diaspora expected to play a significant role in the electoral outcome.
Allegations of Russian influence include reports of a network engaging in propaganda and spreading fake news, with Moldovan police uncovering funds being smuggled in to support these activities. Russia denies any meddling, instead alleging NATO plans to encroach on Moldova.
With Moldova moving towards EU integration after applying for membership in March 2022, experts note that this shift prompts a heightened Russian interest in the country. As the election approaches, European leaders have shown support for Moldova’s aspirations, and the OSCE is deploying observers to ensure fair conduct during the elections. Sandu emphasized the need for Moldova to reject foreign manipulation and uphold democratic principles.
