Leaders from the Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and allied parties are advocating for the immediate implementation of a Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system to prevent a return of fascism. At a seminar in Dhaka, Jamaat’s Nayeb-e-Amir Dr. Syed Abdullah Mohammad Taher emphasized that elections should follow the July Declaration and Charter, warning that rushing to an election without these reforms is a step towards fascism. He claimed that 71% of the population supports the PR system and called for it in both legislative houses.
Other leaders, including Jamaat’s secretary general and representatives from other parties, echoed concerns about the current government’s compromise with fascism and the inadequacies of the July Declaration. They called for the declaration to be formalized and for a truly neutral election process to ensure fairness. There were also criticisms of the interim government’s alleged bias toward a particular party, and calls were made for constitutional changes to accurately reflect the people’s desires and to thwart autocratic tendencies.
