Volunteers from the North East who fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War will be honored at a commemoration on Saturday, October 25, at St Cuthbert’s Church in Billingham. The event, which pays tribute to Ron Dennison, an International Brigade volunteer killed in Spain, will start with a parade at 1pm, followed by a service at the church at 1:30pm. An evening concert will take place at Billingham Social Club at 7pm.
Organized by the North East Volunteers for Liberty and the Friends of St Cuthbert’s, the ceremony will include speakers, performers, and contributions from various organizations, including the Association of the UK Basque Children and trade unions. The event aims to honor International Brigade volunteers and calls for a permanent memorial for Dennison.
Additionally, there are plans for the Friends of St Cuthbert’s to take ownership of the historic church, while the North East Volunteers for Liberty group continues to engage in educational events around the region focused on themes of fascism and totalitarianism.
