Ricardo Salgado, Honduras’ Secretary of Strategic Planning, criticized the recent proclamation of Nasry Asfura as president by two members of the National Electoral Council (CNE), asserting it reflects a new type of coup d’état. He claimed that the declaration came before completing a special recount and resolving challenges stemming from reported irregularities in the November 30 elections. Salgado attributed serious foreign interference, specifically accusing Donald Trump and other “fascist forces,” of executing unprecedented fraud during the electoral process.
He described the situation as a battle not just against right-wing parties but against broader imperial and fascist influences impacting the region. Despite Trump’s explicit support for Asfura, Salgado noted the candidate’s lack of a significant campaign and called attention to threats of economic sanctions aimed at ensuring Asfura’s victory. He stated that recognizing this moment as a new kind of coup is essential to understanding the current political climate and urged vigilance to prevent further manipulation. Both political parties, Libre and the Liberal Party, have raised concerns over voting irregularities and the CNE’s refusal to conduct a recount.
