The Supreme Court criticized the Himachal Pradesh and Union governments for neglecting the severe ecological destruction in Himachal Pradesh, noting that worsening environmental conditions have led to significant natural calamities, including recent floods and landslides that claimed many lives. The court highlighted human activities, such as large-scale road construction and dam projects, as contributing factors to the ecological disaster.
Justice J B Pardiwala and Justice R Mahadevan emphasized the alarming impacts of climate change and urged immediate action from the state to address these issues, stating that revenue cannot be prioritized over environmental protection. The court has requested the Himachal Pradesh government to provide a detailed action plan regarding environmental management by August 25, 2025.
In a separate case, 37 illegal dyeing industries in Ghaziabad were found operating without necessary permits, discharging pollutants into local drains affecting the Yamuna river. A joint committee has been formed to address the situation, resulting in the closure of illegal units.
Additionally, the National Green Tribunal ordered the protection of an ancient well at Bilveshwar Nath Mahadev Mandir in Meerut, which has suffered from encroachment and pollution, stressing its archaeological significance. The case will be reviewed again in November 2025.
