During The Hindu Lit for Life 2026, veteran journalist N. Ram emphasized the importance of a scientific, investigative approach in journalism to combat misinformation and uphold its value. In a discussion moderated by Varghese K. George, Ram, along with authors Rukmini S. and Samanth Subramanian, addressed the theme of bias in journalism. Ram argued that while facts are crucial, their interpretation can differ due to diverse backgrounds in a pluralistic society. He noted that falsehoods are often weaponized on social media and even in mainstream media.
Rukmini highlighted that data journalism is thriving in India but underscored that newsrooms often fail to connect arguments with underlying data. Subramanian acknowledged that journalistic bias is inherent due to personal backgrounds, urging journalists to strive for fairness in reporting. He also indicated that media organizations operate within social contexts which may present institutional biases.
Despite challenges, Ram pointed out that India has a diverse media landscape and digital platforms provide spaces to challenge bias, although he criticized the government’s stance on press freedom. He urged journalism to reclaim its role in advocating for human rights and democracy, citing examples of data use to counter bias. Rukmini also mentioned that misinformation often thrives due to incomplete understanding and communication, which journalists must address.
