In his keynote speech at the Nuffield Summit 2026, Chief Medical Officer for England, Sir Chris Whitty, addressed the issue of healthcare mis- and disinformation. While he reassured the audience that the British public is largely sensible, he acknowledged that misinformation can hinder the use of critical medical tools. He identified several reasons why individuals spread disinformation: for financial gain, to discredit rivals, out of genuine belief and distrust of elites, or simply seeking attention.
Sir Chris discussed why some people are receptive to misinformation, emphasizing the challenge of convincing conspiracy theorists, who see contradictions as validation of their theories. He stressed the need to engage with those who have legitimate concerns, addressing their questions honestly and accurately.
He warned against engaging conspiracy theorists, as it risks legitimizing their views. Instead, the medical community should leverage its credibility to clarify misinformation, and he highlighted the effectiveness of trusted community figures in reaching out during the pandemic. Finally, Sir Chris pointed out that factors like access to vaccinations, rather than disinformation, often explain declines in vaccination rates, urging healthcare leaders to reflect on their roles.
