In the political action thriller “One Battle After Another,” director Paul Thomas Anderson explores themes of family and political unrest through the story of Bob (Leonardo DiCaprio), a washed-up revolutionary. The film begins with Bob’s tumultuous romance with Perfidia (Teyana Taylor) in the far-left activist group “French 75.” After Perfidia’s betrayal, the couple flees with their newborn to a sanctuary city. Sixteen years later, Bob and his daughter Willa (Chase Infiniti) live in hiding until the oppressive military led by villain Steven Lockjaw (Sean Penn) tracks them down, forcing them to escape separately.
The film opens with an intense action sequence at an immigration detention center, revealing the realities of modern-day fascism. It thoughtfully examines political violence and themes of revolution against tyranny. Anderson captures the emotional struggles of his characters, especially Bob, whose desperation is portrayed with humor and depth. Supporting actor Benicio del Toro provides a calming presence, assisting Bob as violence erupts.
The story escalates with thrilling car chases and standoffs, maintaining a fast pace that enhances the tension. As always, Anderson delves into communities shaped by flawed individuals and societal betrayals. “One Battle After Another” delivers a relevant commentary on family during divided times, resonating with audiences through its intense and complex narrative. The film is currently in theaters.
