Türkiye’s Directorate of Communications has rejected claims that a Turkish Airlines (THY) passenger plane diverted from a landing in Libya due to fears of retaliation, calling the allegations false. The Disinformation Combat Center (DMM) stated that THY Flight TK641 was redirected to Bodrum Milas Airport solely because of adverse weather conditions at the intended Benghazi airport, not for any security or political reasons. The DMM emphasized that flights to Libya continued normally following the incident, countering claims of disruptions.
The statement comes amid increased scrutiny of misinformation, particularly following a plane crash near Ankara that killed Libya’s military chief and focused attention on online narratives. Turkish officials are actively working to counter disinformation, assuring that flight safety decisions are based on operational assessments, not speculation. The DMM aims to debunk false claims affecting national security and diplomatic relations, warning against the spread of misleading information.
