Ukrainian journalists and parliamentarians discussed lessons from the war in Ukraine regarding truth and democracy during a panel titled “Accountability Beyond Borders: Journalism and Justice in a Polarized World.” They highlighted how Russia employs propaganda, social media, and disinformation to distort facts and justify aggression, with Ukraine noting that information has become a weapon of war. Lasia Vasylenko emphasized that countering disinformation is a collective responsibility involving media, civil society, and governments.
The panel also showcased Ukraine’s resilience amidst war and corruption, maintaining independent anti-corruption institutions even under martial law, which has preserved societal trust. Vadym Halaichuk articulated that protests during the war are crucial for addressing wrong directions in government, reinforcing Ukraine’s democratic strength.
Philippine journalists were encouraged to verify sources, confront disinformation, and collaborate with civil society for an informed public. Nataliya Gumenyuk stressed the importance of recognizing and confronting crimes globally. The panelists conveyed that battling corruption strengthens democracy and national security, urging Philippine media and academics to support Ukraine by promoting truth and resisting authoritarian influence.
