The National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) launched a three-day capacity-building programme in Mogadishu from October 25 to 27, 2025, aimed at equipping Somali journalists with tools to identify and counter disinformation and misinformation. Supported by the Australian Government, the training gathers 32 journalists from Mogadishu and all five Federal Member States under the theme, “Building Information Integrity in Somalia.”
Omar Faruk Osman, NUSOJ Secretary General, emphasized the training’s significance in safeguarding journalism integrity amid rising disinformation, stressing the need for journalists to maintain high professional standards and serve public interest. H.E. Jenny Da Rin, Australian High Commissioner to Kenya, noted that the workshop aims to strengthen journalists’ abilities to handle false narratives, reinforcing the essential role of professional journalism in maintaining public trust and democratic values.
Abdinasir Hussein, representing the Ministry of Information, Culture, and Tourism, praised the partnership between NUSOJ and the Australian Government, acknowledging the importance of empowering journalists at this critical time in Somalia. The training covers practical topics such as fact-checking, digital verification, and ethical journalism, encouraging collaboration among journalists to enhance media literacy and combat misinformation.
This initiative is part of a broader effort by NUSOJ to promote information integrity and uphold professional standards, contributing to a resilient media community capable of addressing the challenges posed by disinformation and fake news.
