Arabi Facts Hub, an Egyptian organization, leads the fight against misinformation in the Arab world amidst a digital landscape flooded with information, where misleading content often merges with facts. This challenge affects journalists, media students, and fact-checkers, with false information becoming normalized due to political changes, humanitarian crises, and social media’s influence.
The organization combines large language models with an open-source fact-checking database, enabling researchers and journalists to combat misinformation. It monitors inauthentic social media behavior and trains young journalists through a methodology that emphasizes awareness, hands-on practice, and the integration of storytelling with data and AI.
Arabi Facts Hub collaborates with several Egyptian universities, training hundreds of students to enhance their digital literacy and fact-checking skills. Despite facing challenges like varied skill levels and time constraints in university curricula, the hub continues to see positive improvements in student engagement and skills.
Its initiatives have expanded regionally, training about 500 professionals across Egypt, Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq, while forming partnerships with other Arab organizations. The skills taught are crucial in today’s job market, as media organizations seek journalists who can effectively combat misinformation.
The Hub also maintains an up-to-date database of misleading content and produces annual reports on deceptive practices. It promotes media literacy and aims to build a culture of fact-checking in the Arab world, with a growing interest from students and recent collaborations with Al-Fanar Media to further combat online misinformation.
