Men from North East England who fought against fascism in the Spanish Civil War were honored in a recent commemoration at the Stockton International Brigade memorial. The event focused on four local men—George Bright, David Halloran, Thomas Carter, and John Unthank—who either died in battle or from their injuries during the Battle of Jarama in early 1937.
Tony Fox, an organizer from the North East Volunteers for Liberty, expressed gratitude for messages of support from international friends and historians, especially those from relatives of the volunteers. The memorial, dedicated in 2023, highlights the sacrifice of 32 Teesside-born volunteers, 13 of whom engaged in the Battle of Jarama, which was pivotal in defending Spain’s elected government against General Francisco Franco’s coup, supported by fascist regimes.
Messages of remembrance were shared by family members of the fallen, including Maureen Miller, the granddaughter of David Halloran, and reflections from Jane and Rob Peutrell connected to George Bright, emphasizing the importance of remembering the fight against rising fascism.
Speakers at the event included Doc Ritchie, a local writer, and a poem inspired by the International Brigade was read. Organized by the North East Volunteers for Liberty, the commemoration aimed to raise awareness of the region’s ties to this historical struggle.
