The government has issued a warning about an AI-generated deepfake video of Army Chief General Upendra Dwivedi, which is circulating on social media and being shared by Pakistani propaganda accounts. PIB Fact Check reported that these accounts are spreading fake news involving baseless allegations against Indian officials, including claims that Defence Minister Rajnath Singh ordered the Vice Chief of Navy to assist in an attack on an Iranian ship and that the Naval Chief is preparing to resign. The PIB clarified these allegations are entirely false and a part of a disinformation campaign targeting India.
Additionally, the PIB cautioned that the deepfake video falsely attributes statements to General Dwivedi regarding India’s obligations towards Israel concerning an Iranian ship, emphasizing the video is digitally manipulated. They provided links to the original, unedited statement from General Dwivedi to counter the misinformation and encouraged citizens to report suspicious content through official channels. Authorities reiterated the importance of being vigilant against misleading information, especially during sensitive geopolitical circumstances.
