Disinformation experts warn that the rush to identify suspects online after tragic events can lead to serious consequences. Following the shootings in Tumbler Ridge, B.C., the RCMP addressed false accusations against an innocent Ontario woman, Zylii Strang, while confirming the actual shooter was Jesse Van Rootselaar.
Ahmed Al-Rawi from Simon Fraser University noted that biases led to the sharing of images of unrelated transgender individuals once it was revealed that the shooter was trans. He suggested motives for misinformation could range from seeking viral attention to promoting conspiracy theories.
Heidi Tworek from UBC emphasized that social media accelerates the spread of misidentifications, noting that these rushes to judgment can result in severe repercussions for innocent people. RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald clarified that Strang was not involved and highlighted the risks associated with increased public scrutiny.
Melissa Antoinette, an advocate for Strang, urged the removal of false information shared by some media outlets. Krista Strang, Zylii’s mother, expressed her daughter’s devastation over the wrongful allegations, attributing the confusion to superficial connections like shared last names and being transgender.
Mark Deeley, a teacher praised for his response during the shooting, condemned the vilification of trans individuals, promoting love over hate in combating intolerance.
