A fraudulent social media account on X, initially thought to belong to Tumbler Ridge shooter Jesse Van Rootselaar, spread racist and white supremacist content, briefly fooling organizations like the Anti-Defamation League (ADL). The account, which imitated Van Rootselaar’s YouTube profile, was used in online discussions to glean insights on the motives behind the tragic mass shooting that resulted in eight deaths. The account, later revealed as a hoax, featured graphic and inflammatory posts, leading the ADL to issue a retraction after deeming the information from the account unreliable. Experts warned about the dangers of spreading disinformation, especially after tragedies, stating it can marginalize vulnerable groups and inflame social divisions. The account was subsequently suspended, though a new account with the same name continued to propagate the hoax. This situation highlights the need for caution when sharing information online, especially during periods of crisis, as the spread of unverified content can lead to harmful consequences.
