Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) visited New Jersey to endorse Analilia Mejia, a progressive candidate running for Congress in North Jersey. Addressing a packed theater at William Paterson University, Mejia and Sanders criticized mainstream Democrats for not addressing class-based, worker-focused issues. Mejia stated, “In a moment of rising authoritarianism… any old blue just won’t do.”
Sanders, supporting Mejia’s campaign, emphasized the need for a campaign against wealth disparity and highlighted that while Donald Trump poses a danger, the economy also needs reform. He declared, “We don’t just need Democrats, we need progressive Democrats who are prepared to stand up and fight.”
The rally was part of Sanders’ “Fighting Oligarchy” Tour, and featured progressive labor leaders advocating for immigrant protections, emphasizing the need for impactful legislation. Newark Mayor Ras Baraka also spoke against wealth inequality, asserting, “We know what we’re doing is right.”
With a primary election approaching, Mejia’s victory could signify a shift in New Jersey’s political landscape, showcasing a demand for change even in affluent districts. She remarked, “What will happen in New Jersey will spread everywhere.”
