Kennedy Jr. became Health Secretary in February, over 10,000 staff have been fired, including many seasoned professionals. Current employees describe an oppressive atmosphere, likening their situation to a scene from Nineteen Eighty-Four, with many avoiding Zoom meetings and communicating in soundproof spaces to evade monitoring by the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge).
Kennedy’s administration has disrupted health priorities, resulting in the cancellation of numerous research programs deemed “woke.” Insiders report dysfunction, budget cuts, and inadequate resources, with staff scavenging for basic supplies. Kennedy’s controversial stance on vaccines has further polarized staff; he recently dismissed an entire advisory committee on immunization practices, which has raised concerns about the politicization of vaccine science. Critics fear the administration’s actions will ultimately harm public health initiatives, noting the closure of crucial programs like childhood lead-poisoning prevention.
