A public discussion titled “Disinformation as One of the Most Serious Threats at the Global Level and in the Azerbaijani Context” took place in Baku on January 21, 2026. Organized by the Azerbaijan National NGO Forum in partnership with the Media Development Agency and the Press Council of Azerbaijan, the event focused on the escalating risks posed by disinformation, highlighted in the World Economic Forum’s Global Risks Report.
Ramil Iskandarli, Chairman of the Azerbaijan National NGO Forum, emphasized that disinformation has become a systematic danger affecting information integrity, social stability, and democratic institutions in Azerbaijan. He called for civil society to actively combat false information. Natiq Mammadli, Deputy Executive Director of the Media Development Agency, noted that social media is a primary channel for spreading disinformation, advocating for media literacy and public vigilance as essential tools in the fight against it.
Rashad Majid, Chairman of the Press Council, underscored the need for media outlets to adhere to ethical standards to ensure truthfulness in journalism. The event included thematic sessions covering various aspects of disinformation, including the impact of AI-generated fake content and the role of NGOs in enhancing public awareness. Discussions also addressed hybrid threats against Azerbaijan and regional dynamics of disinformation within the Turkic world.
The Azerbaijan National NGO Forum announced plans to continue hosting public discussions on critical societal issues.
