President Donald Trump defended his administration’s response to the fatal ICE shooting of a Minneapolis woman who was reportedly trying to escape federal agents. On Truth Social, he labeled the woman as a “professional agitator” and falsely claimed she “violently” ran over an ICE officer, asserting that the shooting was an act of self-defense.
However, video evidence suggests that the ICE agent may not have been in imminent danger, heightening community distress, especially since the incident occurred near the site of George Floyd’s murder. Amber Sherman, a local organizer, noted that the community is reliving earlier trauma, compounded by a heavy police presence and aggressive immigration enforcement.
Congresswoman Ilhan Omar condemned the shooting as “unconscionable,” emphasizing that the victim was a “legal observer” of the administration’s immigration operations, which heavily target Somali immigrants. She refuted claims of self-defense, stating that no ICE agents were injured during the incident.
Jolanda Jones, a Texas State Representative, criticized the administration’s swift defense of the shooting, describing it as typical behavior in cases of police excessive force. Sherman echoed this sentiment, calling it a response consistent with “fascism,” reflecting a disregard for laws and justice.
Despite the trauma, she urged the community to continue protesting against ICE actions, emphasizing the importance of resistance in the face of such violence.
