The South African Federation of Trade Unions (SAFTU) has condemned the U.S. military intervention in Venezuela under President Trump, labeling it as aggressive and a violation of sovereignty. Reports indicate that the U.S. has targeted Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores, leading to concerns for their safety. SAFTU draws parallels with other imperialist interventions that have resulted in societal destruction, citing examples from Libya and Iraq.
The statement argues that Trump’s policies reflect “oligarchic imperialism,” prioritizing the interests of billionaires over democratic values. SAFTU accuses the Trump administration of fostering a climate of intimidation and militarism globally, particularly in the Global South.
SAFTU calls for the immediate cessation of U.S. military operations in Venezuela, proof of life for Maduro and Flores, a UN condemnation of the aggression, and mobilization against regime-change wars and sanctions. The message was conveyed by SAFTU General Secretary Zwelinzima Vavi, emphasizing the need for international solidarity against imperialism.
