India and Bangladesh focused on maritime security and misinformation at the seventh Colombo Security Conclave (CSC) meeting in New Delhi. India’s national security adviser Ajit Doval highlighted the need for a rules-based maritime order, emphasizing collective action in a challenging global security context. Bangladesh’s security adviser Khalilur Rahman reiterated a “zero tolerance” policy on terrorism while addressing concerns about increasing misinformation and disinformation as new regional threats.
Rahman expressed the importance of collective action against cybersecurity challenges, noting that misinformation has been exacerbated by India-Bangladesh tensions over accusations of communal violence post the ousting of Sheikh Hasina’s government. Bangladesh officials have rejected allegations of attacks on Hindus as unfounded, claiming that the violence was politically motivated, not religious.
Rahman’s participation signifies the second ministerial-level visit from Dhaka since the caretaker administration took over in August 2024. The meeting comes shortly after Hasina’s sentencing for crimes against humanity related to a previous uprising, although it’s unclear if this was discussed. Member states also reviewed past activities and committed to strengthening regional security partnerships.
