The White House and federal agencies have faced criticism for social media posts promoting President Trump’s immigration agenda, including humor and imagery considered racist. A recent post by the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), using the term “remigrate,” sparked backlash due to its association with white nationalism in Europe. Traditionally, “remigration” refers to the mass deportation of non-white immigrants and has been used by far-right politicians. Nicholas Cull, a communication professor, highlights its connection to white supremacy.
The DHS post linked to a government site advocating self-deportation and is perceived as aligning with Trump’s recent adoption of the term. Additionally, the State Department’s proposal for an “Office of Remigration” suggests facilitating the voluntary return of migrants. This pattern of language from the Trump Administration has raised alarms for its negative implications towards certain groups. Previous posts have included references that appear to echo white supremacist ideology, prompting widespread concern over the rhetoric surrounding immigration policy.
