The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR), the largest Muslim civil rights group in the U.S., condemned the Nobel Peace Prize committee’s decision to award this year’s prize to Venezuelan politician Maria Corina Machado, labeling it “insulting and unacceptable.” CAIR criticized Machado for her support of far-right movements in Europe and the Israeli Likud Party, stating that honoring her undermines the fight against racism and fascism globally, particularly in relation to the genocide in Gaza.
CAIR urged Machado to apologize for her affiliations and to renounce her support for anti-Muslim policies. They suggested the Nobel committee should honor those who bravely oppose oppression, rather than figures they view as promoting bigotry and fascism. The group emphasized that recognizing Machado dishonors the legacy of the Nobel Peace Prize and neglects the plight of victims of war and oppression worldwide.
