U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders’ tour, focusing on the term “oligarchy,” has attracted over 107,000 participants across varied political landscapes. The term gained attention after former President Joe Biden mentioned it, leading to increased Google searches. A recent poll indicated that a majority of U.S. voters, including 54% of Democrats and over two-thirds of Independents, understand its meaning. Despite this, Senator Elissa Slotkin (D-Mich.) argued that the term doesn’t resonate with the general public and suggested Democrats avoid it. This stance drew criticisms from progressive voices, including Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, who reported significant support for their message about the influence of wealth and corporate power in politics. Slotkin’s comments echoed sentiments of other establishment figures who claim that using terms like “oligarchs” can harm the party’s marketing. Critics, including progressive strategist Angelo Greco, assert that dismissing the term is condescending and ignores voters’ real experiences with issues related to inequality and corporate power.
