Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) endorsed Graham Platner, a progressive oyster farmer, in his bid to unseat Maine’s Republican Sen. Susan Collins. Platner, described as an outsider and a veteran, aims to address class inequality and challenge the influence of the wealthy. Sanders praised him as a representative of the working class and a candidate ready to confront the oligarchy making Maine unaffordable.
Platner, who initiated his campaign earlier this month, raised $1 million swiftly, branding himself a “friend of the working Mainer.” He expressed gratitude for Sanders’ support, vowing to defeat Collins and reclaim government for the people.
Collins, criticized for her votes on issues affecting the wealthy and health care, has faced mounting frustration from constituents, evidenced by recent protests during her public appearances. Platner, who has been vocal about his discontent with current Democratic leadership, expressed disdain for what he sees as inaction against pressing societal issues.
Maine Gov. Janet Mills is also considered a potential candidate from the establishment Democrats, as she is reportedly contemplating a run for Collins’ seat.
