The Chinese Consulate-General in Cape Town hosted a reception on August 15, 2025, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People’s War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War. Approximately 100 attendees, including South African officials and diplomats, were present at the Castle of Good Hope, where a photo exhibition showcased Japan’s 14-year invasion of China.
Chinese Consul-General You Wenze emphasized the significant contributions of the Chinese people, who endured 35 million casualties, highlighting the importance of remembering history not to foster hatred but to promote peace. He noted the current global challenges posed by unilateralism, protectionism, and power politics.
South Africa’s National Assembly House Chairperson Cedric Frolick echoed these sentiments, cautioning against rising hegemonic attitudes that threaten multilateral cooperation. He called for courage in confronting contemporary challenges and underscored the necessity of principled diplomacy to achieve lasting peace rather than reliance on force.
